Among these is the impressive 101 Land Rover®, distinguished by its superior load capacity compared to other Land Rover series These vehicles are large, V8 machines, with incredible capabilities to carry large loads at high speed.
Series 2 and Series 3 Land Rovers® were also purchased for military use, many of which still survive today. They can often be recognised by the addition of elements such as military lights, wing top boxes and flyscreens. Many were fitted with a military data plate too, showing the military service number, that means history can now be traced.
You can find out your vehicle’s military history by submitting an FOI (Freedom of Information) request to the MOD. Numerous sample letters for this purpose can be found online, guiding you through the process.

The cost of an ex-army Land Rover® can vary significantly based on several factors, such as its condition, model, year, modifications, and rarity. Generally, prices can start from £15,000, but this can vary depending on specification.

Some customers ask us to find out the military history, but we always suggest that this is something that the new owner should do, as you could even find out some very interesting history!
We actually find the reverse is true! Many Land Rovers® owned by the military were little used and dry stored. The military serviced and maintained vehicles far better than any civilian models, and as such, they tend to have a stronger chassis and be better mechanically prepared.
Classic Land Rovers®, particularly ex-military ones, can be a great purchase for many reasons. Their robust build and engineering designed for military use mean they’re incredibly durable and capable off-road vehicles. An old Land Rover®, especially ex-military versions, offer character, ruggedness, and a connection to history.
Because Land Rover® has played a huge part in supplying military vehicles over the years, there are a range of models and modifications available for sale today. One such vehicle is the 101 Land Rover ®, having a greater load capacity than the parallel series example. These were large, V8 machines, capable of carrying large loads at high speed. The forward control, as it became known, was eventually replaced with more modern 4x4s, although many still survive in civilian hands.
Series 2 and Series 3 Land Rovers® were also bought for military use, many of which still survive today. To this day, the military still uses Land Rovers ® in service, most of which are variants of the 90 and 110. Various models included the Snatch and the Tithonus, modified and upgraded for a variety of uses. We have previously restored and sold a range of modified ex-military models, as well as currently stocking military Land Rovers® for sale.
The RAF also relied on Series Land Rovers®, using them not just on runways but even dropping them out of aircrafts under parachutes. The Lightweight Land Rover®, was the primary vehicle for these aerial roles. Interestingly, despite its name, the ‘Lightweight’ variant was actually heavier in its fully built up mode, but its ease of parts removal leant it to being ultimately lighter for drops. These specialised Land Rovers came in various formats, from helicopter starter vehicles, use in the field, and others had active involvement in conflicts. Available in diesel, petrol, and 12 or 24v versions, the 24v machines were used as radio communication vehicles, designated as “Fitted For Radio” (FFR).
Some variants were supplied in Left Hand Drive diesel – predominately for the Dutch military, although there were some very early petrol examples sent across for appraisal purposes. Some Lightweight Land Rovers® could be fully waterproofed using a large kit of parts, enabling them to wade through waters above their height! These modifications and range of uses make buying a military or Lightweight Land Rover® a great investment for any Classic car enthusiast today.
