For sale, Land Rover® Series 3 in Marine Blue (1972).
We are delighted to present for sale this 1972 Land Rover® Series 3, which has been rebuilt onto a galvanised chassis in times past – this particular example comes with a history file so incredibly enormous that it spans more than 4 files full of paperwork… we’ve had to actually put it in a large cardboard box!
The previous keeper of this vehicle used his Series Land Rover® as a “working vehicle” almost every day – rebuilding it himself to give the longevity he desired and required – but due to recent health issues, he was forced to part with it – and it was clearly a very reluctant sale. He even went as far to convert the vehicle to the Perkins Prima 2L Diesel engine – which produced not only more power than the LR 2286cc version, but also is well documented online to return almost 40mpg, as well as giving far more reliability.
Externally, as the photos show, there are plenty of features you’d expect to see – the 4D original number plates, the defender mirrors for improved visibility, front spot lights, rear work lamp for dark evenings, OEM “Land Rover” rear mud flaps, tow bar with electrics to allow towing and colour coded limestone door tops. Sliding side windows have been fitted to give a station wagon type set up. We’ve kept the brief true to how it was at the point of purchase – a handsome but clearly working truck, rather than a show pony only used on rare occasions… the previous keeper did not want a gloss spray finish, as he used it every day. Galvanised Door Tops mean that this usually vulnerable area will not corrode like the mild steel variants will.
On the inside, there are two front outer deluxe high back seats, with a central cubby box, which includes cup holders. A rubberised deluxe trim kit has been fitted to both footwells and the transmission tunnel, for that premium feel. There is a sunroof above the driver and passenger to give additional air flow (on top of the opening vents) which is welcomed. The rear houses a pair of twin bench seats to bring seating for six people including the driver – and this has been lined with chequer plate for additional strength and protection above standard. Sound deadening is fitted on the insides of the roof to reduce cabin intrusion whilst driving. Sliding Rear Side Windows give a light and airy feel inside the cabin, whilst aiding blindspot monitoring for the driver.
Out on the road is where this really shines though – it fires straight up with the first turn of the key, and thanks to the galvanised chassis rebuild, feels well sorted behind the wheel. This is where that enormous history file really comes into play with the evidence of so much money spent over the years – along with the parabolic springs for a better ride, and the cross climate tyres for superior road handling. We aren’t surprised that the previous keeper was absolutely gutted to be moving it on – it is well set up, right in the sweet spot, with a good turn of pace too. Thanks to larger drum brakes than standard, it stops better than you’d expect also. This truck, despite MOT exemption, has an MOT with no advisories until late July 2027 – which is no mean feat, even in a galvanised chassis vehicle. The overdrive improves fuel economy and reduces cabin intrusion.
In summary then – if you are looking for a Series Land Rover® which can be put to work – either through a vintage business and sign-writing the sides of the hard top, or just for a laugh at the weekend with less of the drawbacks associated with Series ownership – then this is well worth considering. With a long MOT , alongside MOT & Tax exemption, alongside that previous rebuild and strong history file – not only should it stand the test of time, but it should also prove to be a cost-effective vehicle to own in the longer term.
