Founder and Classic Land Rover® Expert at John Brown 4×4

John Brown Snr

John Brown Snr is the Founder and Director of John Brown 4×4, a family-run business dedicated to the sourcing, restoration and sale of Classic Land Rovers®. With more than 30 years of experience in the world of Classic and Series Land Rovers®, John is widely regarded for his depth of knowledge, practical expertise and long-standing passion for the marque.

John’s journey into Classic Land Rovers® began in the 1990s, after meeting respected “Land Rover Guru” Clive MacDonald Smith, a technical writer for Land Rover Owner Magazine. Under Clive’s guidance, John developed a detailed understanding of Classic and Series Land Rovers®, from their mechanical character to their historical importance. This early mentorship helped shape the knowledge and standards that would later underpin John Brown 4×4.

Before founding the business, John worked as a primary school teacher. After leaving teaching following a health scare, he began to focus more seriously on Land Rovers®. His first major project was an ex-military police Land Rover Lightweight bought from Stockton, Teesside. The vehicle turned out to be in much poorer condition than expected, leading John into a full restoration. After eventually selling it, he missed it enough to buy another — then another — and what began as a personal interest gradually became a business.

John Brown 4×4 was established in 2004, starting from John’s driveway at home. Since then, the company has grown into a recognised global name in the Classic Land Rover® market, supporting customers across the UK and overseas. The business has grown substantially over the years with a core team of people contributing in preserving and restoring these iconic British vehicles.

As Founding Director, John continues to attend the business daily, working alongside John Brown Jnr and the wider team. His role includes overseeing the company, offering technical support, advising customers and helping ensure each buyer is matched with the right Land Rover® for their needs. John enjoys the challenge and joy that Land Rover® ownership brings – whether it is driving them or getting into the “nitty gritty” of working on these vehicles. John remains a familiar presence in the business, working closely with the team and his family because, in his words, Land Rovers® are “in the blood”.

John’s expertise spans sourcing, restoration, sales and purchasing, and he is known within the business as a fountain of knowledge for all things Classic Land Rover®. He has a particular love for the 1948 and 1949 Series 1 “lights behind the grille” models, which he sees as the genesis of the Land Rover® story.

Over the years, John has taken Land Rovers® across the UK and further afield, with Scottish road trips among his favourites. He also enjoys the hands-on nature of the vehicles — whether driving them, using them for practical jobs or getting into the detail of how they work. The workshop environment and the skilled team around him remain an important part of what he enjoys about the business.

John Brown 4×4 remains wholly family-owned, allowing the company to stay flexible, personal and values-led. For John, the strength of the business lies in its people, its honesty and its commitment to giving customers clear advice. We pride ourselves on “giving it to you straight” – even when that means recommending a different vehicle, a less expensive option or advising a customer to think carefully before buying.

Among John’s proudest achievements are seeing the business grow from a one-man operation into an internationally recognised Classic Land Rover® specialist, while helping preserve an important part of British motoring heritage. Highlights have included work connected with The Royal Yacht Britannia and the Commonwealth Games, as well as photoshoots with Belstaff and Ralph Lauren, and a significant feature in Ben Fogle’s book Land Rover.

Outside the business, John is an accomplished musician and has played in a ceilidh band for many years. He plays a wide range of instruments, including piano, guitar, clarinet, flute and violin.
