We are delighted to present for sale this 1992 Land Rover® 90, which as the headline paragraph above shows, is absolutely fully laden with specification and options – this particular example is one of the latest releases from British forces that we have ever seen, having only been in civilian ownership since summer 2012. We cannot recall seeing a later one in recent times.

Externally, as the photos show, there is much to talk about – front the front bumper with pintle, to the front lamp guards, recent green canvas with side windows, side steps, rear mud flaps, tow bar and electrics to allow towing, military “screw” lamp lenses for faster changing of 12v bulbs – the list really does go on and on. There are even four front spot lamps, which aid visibility by night, and two of these are switched independently of the main beam, meaning you can opt to use them or not. The entire vehicle comes together to create a real show stopper – a military style 90 with just about every optional extra which you could ever want or desire. Even the Wolf wheels and Goodyear G90 tyres look great, and this is exactly what would’ve been fitted during operational service.

On the inside, there are two front deluxe high back style seats, with matting to the footwells area. The front cabin benefits from a proper, Exmoor Trim carpeting set, which includes the transmission tunnel – for both a premium feel and additional sound deadening. There is a central cubby box with cup holders, which is handy for both the drive through and keeping items out of sight if so desired. This truck also benefits from an uprated set of soft top “sticks” which includes a safety roll hoop and proper 3 point inertia reel seat belts, which give “plug and play” ability without needing the adjustment of static seat belts. The rear houses a twin pair of bench seats, which give seating for four people, all of which have lap belts fitted – meaning that six people can travel in this vehicle, fully belted. The added benefit of a recent canvas which includes side windows, means that if you are travelling in the rear it is a very pleasant place to be.

What really sets this Land Rover® 90 apart though is the low mileage – the speedometer is in KM’s with a MPH insert, as many are, and the clock only reads 128k kilometers – that translates to just 79,546 miles from new – less than 2500 every year since build. We often find this is the case with British Army trucks like this – they spent huge periods of time in dry storage awaiting deployment, which means they’ve avoided salty roads in the winter, and adverse road conditions that similar aged civilian counterparts have not. This means we always find them in better condition throughout – and when cast off in 2012, they almost always found their way into the hands of an enthusiast, who used them sparingly – this is why it has only had 3 keepers since being sold in July 2012 at auction. Many of these early 90s do not benefit from power steering, however this one has it – which makes driving and parking an easy experience. There are so many areas where one can look where you can see it has done very little – even down to the swivels which look almost new.

Whilst we will concede that it is true the 2.5 normally aspirated diesel will win no speed awards – the reason it was a favoured choice for the military was due to its rugged simplicity and lack of inherent faults – we have seen these with verified mileages in excess of 350,000, with nothing but routine servicing being carried out. Despite the coil springs, synchro gearbox, disc brakes and power steering – there are no computers or ECU’s fitted to this vehicle… it feels more akin to a modern Defender to drive, but without this important omission. This is the biggest attraction of all, as it can be maintained at home with a Haynes Manual for £11 off Amazon, and there is no need for expensive scanning equipment during ownership. We have found that many are “stepping back” into these earlier 90s because of the fact that their later car has proved to be unreliable when aging due to electrical foibles and sensor issues… not something that this will ever have to deal with. You’ll never need to go to the main dealer to fix an issue, and everything can be maintained with a basic, own brand tool kit.

In summary, if you are looking for a Land Rover® which you can pass down through the family, and which will benefit from MOT & Tax exemption in times to come, this is well worth considering. It is a far superior package in relation to the driving experience than a Series, but without the later complications which annoy and irritate so many. With that late release from the forces, low mileage and striking looks – it is ready to enjoy whenever you take a fancy to a trip out!
