The classic Land Rover® Defender had an impressive production run spanning 67 years, finally ending in January 2016. Interestingly, before 1991, they weren’t known as Defenders. Instead, these earlier models were referred to as Series I, II, III, or the 90. However it was the introduction of the Discovery model that led to a need for a differentiating name, and so the name ‘Defender’ was born. Production of the Defender 90 was reinstated in 2020 with a modernised version as a luxury SUV.

Throughout its history, the Land Rover® Defender had a number of variations, notably the 90, 110, and 127, denoting differences in wheelbase lengths. Alongside these models, there were specialised versions made for particular uses such as pickup trucks, vans, ambulances, fire engines and breakdown recovery trucks. This diversity showcased the adaptability of these vehicles, catering to a wide range of purposes and industries.
Perhaps the finest engine Land Rover® produced was the 200tdi, 2495cc, turbo diesel engine. Capable of astronomical mileage, and with very few inherent faults, these engines still survive today, and are commonly retro fitted to 90s and Series examples – a testament to their enduring reliability.
Perhaps a turning point in Defenders came when the ECU controlled TD5 was introduced in 1999. Although powerful and refined, this engine failed to end up a favourite of enthusiasts – the many sensors and electrics made it hard to repair for the road side mechanic, and as the engine became older, common faults arose. The final engine iteration, the TDCi, was fitted to the last of the fleet, before production ceased entirely in 2016.
Choosing a Land Rover® Defender means owning a vehicle with a legacy of resilience, adventure, and unparalleled off-road capabilities. These iconic vehicles are more than just to get you around; they’re rugged, durable, offer superior comfort, and are designed to conquer any terrain and weather the toughest conditions.

The Land Rover® 90 and Defender are popular choices for those looking for a working vehicle, but purchasing a good one can be a difficult task. As they age, many components deteriorate more rapidly than most would think, with well used examples running out of chassis life inside 15 years – not something that Land Rover® would be proud to admit. The lack of galvanising to mild steel cappings, coupled with failings to rectify catalytic corrosion between aluminium and steel components has made finding a good one, some task. Of course, the design of the Land Rover® Defender 90 makes it ideal for rebuilding, which many elect to do once they reach their useful lifespan.
The 90 and Defender stand out as the most iconic among the Classic Land Rover® models, celebrated for their ruggedness and exceptional off-road capabilities. Initially equipped with 2500cc petrol engines reminiscent of the Series 3 that it followed, these vehicles later embraced normally aspirated diesel engines, eventually introducing turbo variants.
The Land Rover® 110 epitomises versatility and durability with its 110-inch wheelbase, offering increased space and functionality compared to its smaller counterparts.
The Defender 90 remains one of the most desirable classic Land Rover® models ever produced. Originally developed from the Land Rover Ninety introduced in 1983, the Defender 90 became synonymous with rugged British engineering and genuine all-terrain capability.
Today, demand for classic Defender 90 models remains strong among collectors, enthusiasts and first-time classic vehicle owners alike. Their combination of practicality, simplicity and iconic styling has helped them achieve legendary status within the classic 4×4 market.
While Defender 90 models are renowned for their durability, age and usage can take their toll. Some of the most important areas to inspect include:
In our experience, a well-maintained Defender with documented history is often a better purchase than a lower-priced example requiring extensive restoration work.

One of the reasons the Defender has remained so popular is the variety of engines available throughout its production life.
Widely regarded as one of the finest engines ever fitted to a Land Rover®, the 200Tdi offers excellent reliability, strong torque and straightforward maintenance. Many enthusiasts actively seek out Defender 90 models fitted with the 200Tdi due to its reputation for longevity.
The 300Tdi refined the formula further, offering improved comfort and drivability while retaining the robustness that made its predecessor so successful.
Introduced in 1998, the Td5 delivered more power and refinement. While more technologically advanced, it remains a popular choice among enthusiasts seeking a balance between classic character and modern usability.
The final generation of classic Defenders benefited from improved comfort, revised interiors and modern diesel powertrains, making them particularly desirable among buyers looking for everyday usability.
One of the most common questions buyers ask is whether to choose a Defender 90 or Defender 110.
The Defender 90 offers a more compact driving experience and is often favoured by enthusiasts looking for a traditional Land Rover® feel. Its shorter wheelbase improves manoeuvrability both on and off-road and makes it particularly popular for recreational use.
The Defender 110 provides additional interior space, increased practicality and greater load-carrying capability. This makes it a popular choice for families, overland travellers and commercial users.
Neither is necessarily better than the other. The right choice depends entirely on how the vehicle will be used.
Unlike the modern Defender introduced in 2020, classic Defender 90 and Defender 110 models offer a distinctly analogue driving experience. Their simple engineering, ladder-frame chassis and mechanical character appeal to enthusiasts seeking a vehicle with genuine heritage and personality.
Growing collector demand, limited supply and strong enthusiast communities have helped maintain interest in classic Land Rover Defenders worldwide. Well-maintained examples continue to attract strong demand both in the UK and overseas markets, particularly original vehicles and those restored to a high standard.
