Here for sale is an ever popular, simple to maintain, mechanically and structurally solid, ex-military Land Rover® 90 – on the cusp of MOT & Tax exemption in December 2026. The previous sentence explains why these Land Rovers® are becoming so popular. When you consider that a TDCI or a TD5 Land Rover® has an annual tax bill in excess of £700, and cannot really be maintained at home or a village garage/enthusiast due to the complexity of the ECUs, then a simple, coil sprung, five speed Land Rover® that is free to tax and does require a visit to your local MOT station is very appealing.
Coupled to the above, it is not widely known that these military Land Rovers® often led sheltered lives in the British forces meaning that they have survived in unbelievable condition compared to their civilian counterparts of the same era. The fact they were stored indoors for many years and rarely used on salted roads culminates in a vehicle which, in this case, has an unwelded chassis which is like new. Also, the 2.5 Diesel mechanical engine is simple and rugged – and you always know you are going to get where you are going – and that is why the military chose them. This example is no exception and enjoys a fantastic chassis, great mechanicals, uncorroded bodywork and very low miles for its age and price point. If you were to spend a similar amount of money on a civilian TD5, you would expect something that was in need of constant financial input and “long in the tooth” – not with this – it is great condition and it is simple to maintain, and that is its USP.
As you can see from the photos – this is a handsome Land Rover® with all the features you’d hope to see – from the rear bumperettes, to the NATO hitch, to the matching bonnet mounted spare, the canvas with side windows, front towing pintle and colour coded wheels – exactly as you would expect – it is even wearing the correct Goodyear G90 tyres it would’ve had during service. Aluminium door tops have been fitted to ward off corrosion – a common failure area.
The interior is much the same affair – with three front deluxe seats, and correct convoy light switch in the centre, with rear bench seats to bring seating to seven people including the driver. The canvas with side windows gives a light and airy feel, with a load mat to the rear area, and a roll over hoop to protect the occupants inside. Remember – if you fancy Apple CarPlay or Android Auto – it can be fitted where the light switch is (and the lights moved to the RH stalk). The racking can also be removed between the front and rear if desired – we’ve elected to keep it in, as many who purchase these carry dogs or bikes and would rather be away from the mud…
This Land Rover® 90 was driven in to HQ by a member of the team as part of a job lot of vehicles – acting as a support truck to a much more elderly set of grandparents who came from the same home – a pair of Series 1s! – and drove without issue for almost 4 hours. As mentioned above – this can be maintained at home with a basic socket set and a £13 Haynes Manual – despite having a five speed all synchro gearbox, modern suspension, front disc brakes – just like your modern car – but without the cost or the complication of an OBD scanning tool.
In summary then, if you are looking for a family fun bus for the spring or summer, at a reasonable price, which in just 9 months time won’t need to line the chancellors pockets with road tax and can be driven without MOT – alongside classic insurances – then this has to be worth considering. We’re quite enamoured with this truck – which provides cost effective motoring in a vehicle which, if past trends are anything to go by, should hold their value well!
