It’s all part of our commitment to helping you enjoy classic Land Rover® ownership with confidence.

Why Regular Servicing Matters

One of the joys of owning a classic Land Rover® is getting to know the vehicle and understanding its character. Unlike modern cars, these vehicles were built in a different era, with simpler mechanical systems that benefit from regular attention throughout the year.

Classic Land Rover® vehicles are built differently from modern cars.

While their simple engineering is one of their greatest strengths, regular maintenance is essential to identify wear before it develops into more significant repairs.

Routine servicing helps to:

  • Maintain reliability
  • Identify minor issues before they become costly repairs
  • Keep essential components correctly lubricated
  • Monitor fluid levels and mechanical condition
  • Preserve long-term vehicle value
  • Give owners confidence before longer journeys

Many classic Land Rover® owners cover relatively low annual mileage, but age alone can affect seals, fluids, rubber components and moving parts. That’s why regular servicing remains just as important as mileage.

While routine servicing and annual MOTs form an important part of maintenance, most classic Land Rover® owners will also carry out additional checks and minor adjustments between workshop visits. Tightening fixings, checking fluid levels, lubricating moving parts and keeping an eye on general wear are all part of responsible classic vehicle ownership.

At John Brown 4×4, we believe in being honest about what owning a classic Land Rover® involves. These vehicles reward owners who take the time to understand them, and many enthusiasts genuinely enjoy the hands-on nature of ownership. It’s all part of the experience and one of the reasons these iconic vehicles continue to have such a loyal following.

Of course, not every owner wants to pick up the spanners themselves. That’s where our workshop can help. Whether your Land Rover® needs routine servicing, advice on a developing issue or specialist repairs, our experienced team is always happy to support John Brown 4×4 customers and help keep their vehicles in excellent condition.

“One thing we always tell customers is that a classic Land Rover® isn’t a modern car, and that’s exactly why people love them. They benefit from regular servicing, but they also appreciate a little attention between visits. Looking after one becomes part of the ownership experience, and with the right care they’ll continue to put a smile on your face for decades.”

Servicing Designed for Classic Land Rover® Vehicles

Working on classic Land Rover® models requires specialist knowledge and experience.

Our workshop understands the differences between various generations of Land Rover®, including:

  • Series I
  • Series II & IIA
  • Series III
  • Defender
  • Range Rover Classic
  • Lightweight models
  • Military Land Rover® vehicles

Rather than following a generic service schedule, we understand the common characteristics and maintenance requirements of these iconic vehicles, allowing us to tailor our recommendations accordingly.

What’s Included in a Service?

The exact work carried out will depend on the type of service your vehicle requires, but a typical service may include:

  • Engine oil replacement
  • Oil filter replacement
  • Visual inspection of key mechanical components
  • Brake system inspection
  • Steering and suspension checks
  • Fluid level inspection and top-up
  • Cooling system checks
  • General vehicle health inspection
  • Identification of any areas requiring future attention

Should we identify anything that requires additional work, we’ll always discuss our recommendations with you before proceeding.

Major Servicing

Some vehicles require more comprehensive servicing depending on their mileage, usage and maintenance history.

If your Land Rover® is due a major service, additional labour and maintenance may be required to ensure every important system receives the attention it needs.

Our team will be happy to advise which level of servicing is appropriate for your vehicle and answer any questions before work begins.

MOT Preparation & Independent Testing

Preparing a classic Land Rover® for its MOT involves much more than simply checking whether it will pass. At John Brown 4×4, we take a proactive approach by thoroughly inspecting your vehicle beforehand, identifying any areas that may require attention and carrying out any agreed maintenance or repairs before the test takes place.

Once your Land Rover® is ready, we arrange for it to be tested at a fully independent MOT testing station. While we have the expertise and facilities to undertake MOT testing ourselves, we deliberately choose not to. We believe an independent inspection provides complete impartiality and gives our customers added confidence that every vehicle is being assessed fairly and objectively.

This independent approach ensures there’s no conflict of interest between preparing the vehicle and carrying out the MOT itself. It reflects our commitment to honesty, transparency and putting our customers’ interests first.

Combined with regular servicing and preventative maintenance, MOT preparation helps keep your classic Land Rover® safe, dependable and ready to enjoy throughout the year.
