SOLD SOLD SOLD
For Sale, Land Rover® Series 2a Ragtop in Drab Olive (1962)
MOT until 16th March 2017. Tax Exempt. 2286cc Petrol.
Here we have for sale a fairly original, ex-military Land Rover®, as designated by the military data plate on the bulkhead. Its original military number is still present being 57 DM 07, so those interested may apply to the heritage museum for details of its military life. We believe it is a reasonably rare “Rover 8” suffix.
Externally, many of the military features have survived, not least the ‘squady’ style paint finish in Drab Olive – it is certainly not concourse, but is absolutely in-line with the history of a vehicle such as this, and we think it looks just as it should and have elected to merely clean and preserve it. There are various military sockets and badging along with military bonnet catches, oil cooler, period reflectors and glass light lenses, all of which is nice to see. There is some evidence on the tub that at one point, aerials may have been fitted, so perhaps at some point this truck may have been involved in radio work and even the numberplate light is a military convoy type. There are also features which survive from the day which one likes to see – the bonnet mounted spare, wing mounted mirrors and deep sills. The canvas is in good condition and matches nicely to the military paint finish.
On the inside, there are three front seats with twin rear bench seats already fitted. Deluxe matting is fitted throughout. Again originality shines through here, with the correct and early metal spoke steering wheel, twin wiper motors and military flyscreens.
Having had only 5 former keepers since release in 1970 (hence the H registration) this old girl drives really well. The steering is light and responsive, perhaps aided by the correct size and profile of tyre, and she pulls willingly until the speedo dial starts to run out of room! The photos show her running on a cold day so please disregard the exhaust fumes – she was cold at this point and it is just water vapour! The engine is actually a delightful unit, ticking over at very low revs whilst sounding just as it should.
In summary, if you are looking for a military soft top 2a which looks the part and drives really well, then this tax-exempt old girl is looking for a home with you!
