Depending on the individual Land Rover®, this could mean improving an existing mechanical system, replacing tired components, upgrading an engine or making sympathetic upgrades that help the vehicle perform more effectively on today’s roads.

Performance doesn’t simply mean horsepower.
For a classic Land Rover®, we’d argue that good performance is about how effectively the entire vehicle works together.
An engine that runs properly, a drivetrain that delivers power effectively, responsive steering, well-maintained suspension and dependable braking can collectively make a far greater difference to the driving experience than simply trying to increase engine output.
Our approach therefore considers the vehicle as a whole.

The objective is always to make the Land Rover® perform as well as it reasonably can while respecting the vehicle we’re working with.
It’s easy to associate a performance upgrade with making a vehicle faster, but that’s rarely our priority with a classic Land Rover®.
These vehicles were never designed to compete with modern cars for acceleration or outright speed. Attempting to make them do so can mean changing many of the characteristics that make them enjoyable classics in the first place.
Instead, we focus on improvements that can make the vehicle feel stronger, smoother and more responsive.
A well-performing classic Land Rover® should inspire confidence behind the wheel. Power delivery should be appropriate for the vehicle, mechanical components should operate correctly and the different systems should complement one another.
For an owner, these improvements can make regular driving and longer journeys considerably more enjoyable without sacrificing the classic Land Rover® experience.
Before recommending upgrades, it’s important to understand whether the vehicle actually needs them.
Classic Land Rovers® can change considerably during their lifetime. Components wear, previous owners make modifications and maintenance standards vary enormously from one vehicle to another.
Sometimes a perceived lack of performance isn’t an indication that a vehicle needs upgrading at all.
Servicing, correctly setting up existing components or replacing worn parts can restore performance that has gradually been lost over decades of use.
That’s why we assess the individual vehicle before recommending changes. If maintaining or refurbishing the existing mechanical system is the better solution, that’s what we’ll recommend.
Classic Defender 90 and Defender 110 models are often purchased by customers who intend to use them regularly, making drivability an important consideration.
The specification of these vehicles varies considerably depending on age, engine, previous ownership and any modifications made during their lifetime.
Rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach to Defender performance upgrades, we’ll consider how the particular vehicle currently performs and what the owner wants to achieve.
For some customers, improvements to steering, braking or suspension may make the greatest difference. For others, upgrades to drivetrain or engine performance may be more appropriate.
The result should still feel unmistakably like a classic Defender – simply one that performs as well as it can.
Performance upgrades need to be approached differently on a Series Land Rover®.
For many Series I, Series II, Series IIA and Series III owners, the slower pace and mechanical involvement are fundamental parts of the appeal. Increasing performance at the expense of that character isn’t necessarily an improvement.
Originality usually plays a much greater role, particularly with rare or highly collectible examples.
Where work is appropriate, our focus is therefore on sympathetic mechanical improvements and ensuring the existing systems perform correctly.
A well-maintained Series Land Rover® shouldn’t be expected to behave like a modern Defender – and we don’t think it should.
The engine is naturally one of the first areas people think about when discussing vehicle performance.
However, replacing an original engine simply to achieve greater power isn’t generally the approach we advocate.
For many classic Land Rovers®, retaining the correct engine or an appropriate period specification contributes significantly to the character and authenticity of the vehicle.
Where an engine has deteriorated or a vehicle is undergoing a more comprehensive rebuild, engine rebuilding or mechanical refurbishment may provide an opportunity to restore lost performance and improve long-term reliability.
The approach depends entirely on the vehicle.
We’ll consider originality, condition, intended use and the wider restoration before recommending substantial mechanical work to a vehicle engine.
Engine conversions are common within the wider classic Land Rover® world, but they aren’t something we recommend automatically.
Changing an engine can have implications for originality, character, mechanical compatibility and potentially future desirability. Increasing engine performance may also place additional demands on other components throughout the vehicle.
For that reason, our preference is generally to work sympathetically with the vehicle’s existing mechanical specification.
Where significant engine work forms part of a complete rebuild or restoration, we’ll consider the vehicle as a whole and advise on an appropriate solution rather than viewing increased power in isolation.
Changing one component can influence another.
Greater engine performance is of limited benefit if braking, steering or suspension aren’t capable of complementing it. Likewise, improving suspension won’t necessarily transform a vehicle if worn steering or drivetrain components are affecting the driving experience.
Our workshop therefore considers how the different mechanical systems work together.
This may mean combining performance work with other John Brown 4×4 upgrade services, including:
Power Steering Upgrades – reducing steering effort and improving low-speed manoeuvrability on suitable vehicles.
Brakes & Suspension Upgrades – improving control, ride quality and driving confidence where appropriate.
Seating & Interior Comfort Upgrades – improving drive comfort and enjoyment, particularly when the vehicle is used for longer journeys.
By considering the whole vehicle, we can recommend improvements that complement rather than conflict with one another.
There isn’t a universal answer.
With particularly original, rare or historically significant vehicles, retaining factory specification may be more important than achieving additional performance. Modifications that substantially change such a vehicle can potentially make it less appealing to originality-focused collectors.
For a Land Rover® purchased primarily to be driven, sympathetic improvements may make the vehicle significantly more enjoyable to own.
The quality and appropriateness of the work matter too.
That’s why our recommendations start with the individual Land Rover®, rather than a catalogue of modifications we think every owner should have.
Sometimes we’ll recommend an upgrade. Sometimes we’ll recommend rebuilding or refurbishing what’s already there. And sometimes the best advice is to leave a perfectly good original vehicle alone.
