Rustproofing & Corosion Protection

Protecting Your Classic Land Rover® for the Years Ahead

Rust and corrosion are realities of owning an older Land Rover®. These vehicles were built to work hard and last, but decades of exposure to water, road salt, mud and changing weather conditions can inevitably take their toll. Even a beautifully presented classic can have areas underneath that require ongoing attention.

At John Brown 4×4, we offer rustproofing and corrosion protection for classic Land Rovers® purchased from us, helping protect vulnerable areas and preserve vehicles for the future.

Rustproofing can be carried out as part of the preparation of a vehicle you’re purchasing from us or later as part of our ongoing aftersales support.

Please note: our rustproofing service is exclusively available for vehicles purchased from John Brown 4×4. We do not offer rustproofing as a standalone service for vehicles purchased elsewhere.

Why is Rust Protection so Important on a Classic Land Rover®?

Classic Land Rovers® are particularly interesting vehicles when it comes to corrosion because of the different materials used in their construction.

Their combination of aluminium body panels and steel components helped create the lightweight, durable vehicles we know today, but age, moisture and the interaction between different metals can all contribute to deterioration.

Chassis components, bulkheads, outriggers, crossmembers, fixings and other less visible areas can all warrant particular attention as a vehicle gets older.

And that’s the important point: corrosion isn’t always immediately obvious.

A Land Rover® can look fantastic externally while deterioration is developing elsewhere. Preventative protection, combined with regular inspection and maintenance, can therefore help address the problem before it becomes a much bigger job.

Prevention is Better Than Cure

Once significant corrosion has taken hold, putting it right can require considerably more work than protecting a sound vehicle in the first place.

That’s why we view rustproofing as preventative maintenance rather than simply a cosmetic treatment.

The aim is to provide additional protection to vulnerable areas, helping reduce their exposure to the moisture, dirt and road contaminants that contribute to corrosion.

It can’t make a classic vehicle immune from rust indefinitely – and we’d be wary of anyone suggesting otherwise.

A classic Land Rover® still needs to be inspected and maintained throughout its life. But appropriate rust protection can form an important part of preserving its condition and potentially reducing the likelihood of more substantial corrosion repairs further down the line.

Rustproofing Starts With Understanding the Vehicle

Applying a protective treatment shouldn’t simply mean covering everything underneath the vehicle and hoping for the best.

Before recommending rustproofing, it’s important to understand the condition of the Land Rover® itself.

Existing corrosion or deterioration may require attention before protective treatment is applied. Simply covering a problem doesn’t resolve it and can potentially make future inspection more difficult.

Our familiarity with classic Land Rovers® means we know the areas that warrant attention and can consider rust protection as part of the wider condition and maintenance of the vehicle.

If something needs addressing first, we’d rather identify it than hide it.

Expert Insight: Why is Rust Prevention Important?

We asked Aimee Reeson, Bodyshop Manager & Workshop Technician, where she typically sees corrosion developing on older Land Rovers® and why taking a preventative approach matters:

“With classic Land Rovers®, corrosion isn’t always obvious from the outside. A vehicle can look really good but still have areas underneath that are starting to deteriorate, particularly around the chassis, bulkhead and other places where moisture and dirt can collect. That’s why prevention and regular inspection are so important. If we can protect a sound vehicle and keep an eye on those vulnerable areas, we’ve got a much better chance of slowing corrosion down. It’s always preferable to deal with things early rather than wait until rust has developed into a much bigger repair.”

Protecting a Land Rover® You’re Buying From Us

Rust protection can be particularly worthwhile when incorporated into the preparation of a vehicle you’re purchasing from us at John Brown 4×4.

Every classic Land Rover® we sell goes through preparation before reaching its new owner. This gives our team an opportunity to inspect the vehicle and discuss any additional preventative work that may be appropriate.

If rustproofing is suggested, it can be incorporated into this preparation so that your Land Rover® leaves us with additional protection already in place.

For customers intending to use their vehicle throughout the year – particularly during wet winter months – it’s something well worth discussing with our team.

Rustproofing as an Aftersales Service

Corrosion protection isn’t something that should necessarily be considered once and then forgotten.

The condition of an older vehicle changes over time, particularly if it’s regularly driven in wet conditions, used off-road or exposed to winter roads.

If you already own a classic Land Rover® purchased from John Brown 4×4, you can return to us to discuss rust protection as part of our customer-only aftersales service.

This also gives us an opportunity to look at how the vehicle has changed since purchase and identify areas that may require attention.

As with our servicing, bodyshop and other aftersales services, rustproofing is only available for vehicles originally purchased from John Brown 4×4.

Which Classic Land Rovers® Can Benefit From Rustproofing?

Corrosion isn’t limited to one generation of Land Rover®.

Depending on their condition and construction, rust protection may be worth considering across vehicles including:

However, age alone doesn’t determine what treatment a vehicle requires.

How it has been stored, where it has been driven, previous restoration work, repairs, modifications and its current condition can all influence the most appropriate approach.

That’s why we prefer to consider the individual vehicle rather than prescribe exactly the same treatment to every classic Land Rover®.

Rustproofing For Regularly Driven Classics

Not every classic Land Rover® spends its life tucked away in a dry garage. Many of our customers buy these vehicles because they actually want to use them – and we know that’s part of their appeal.

Regular use inevitably exposes the underside of a vehicle to more water, dirt and road debris. Winter driving introduces the additional issue of road salt, while off-road use can allow mud and moisture to accumulate in less accessible areas.

If you plan to drive your classic Land Rover® regularly rather than reserve it exclusively for dry summer days, corrosion protection and regular inspections become particularly worthwhile considerations.

A little preventative attention can be preferable to discovering significant corrosion several years down the line.

Rustproofing Isn’t a Substitute for Maintenance

It’s important to be realistic about what rustproofing can and can’t do. Protective treatments can help reduce exposure and slow the development of corrosion, but they don’t remove the need to look after an ageing vehicle.

We’d still recommend keeping an eye on your Land Rover®, having it inspected regularly and dealing with emerging corrosion before it becomes more extensive.

Areas of protection may also need to be checked and, where appropriate, renewed over time. This forms part of the reality of classic vehicle ownership.

At John Brown 4×4, we’d rather be transparent about that than suggest a single treatment will permanently solve the problem.

Rust Repair & Our Specialist Bodyshop

If corrosion has already progressed beyond the point where preventative treatment is appropriate, our dedicated bodyshop can assess what work may be required.

Classic Land Rover® bodywork presents its own challenges, particularly because of the combination of aluminium panels, steel components and the legacy of repairs that may have been completed during a vehicle’s lifetime.

Our Bodyshop Manager & Workshop Technician, Aimee Reeson, and the wider team understand these vehicles and the importance of approaching repairs sympathetically.

This creates an important distinction between rust prevention and rust repair.

Where a vehicle is sound, appropriate protection can help preserve it. Where corrosion already requires attention, the priority should be dealing with that deterioration properly before thinking about protecting the vehicle for the future.

Preserving More Than the Appearance

Corrosion protection isn’t primarily about making the underside of a vehicle look better.

It’s about preservation.

Classic Land Rovers® are increasingly valued not simply as vehicles but as pieces of British motoring history. Taking sensible steps to protect the underlying structure and components can help keep more of these vehicles on the road for years to come.

For owners, it can also provide greater reassurance that they’re taking a proactive approach to maintaining their Land Rover® rather than simply waiting for problems to develop.

That’s particularly important to us at John Brown 4×4 because our relationship with a vehicle doesn’t necessarily end when it leaves our showroom.

Our aftersales services are designed to help customers continue caring for the classic Land Rovers® we’ve supplied.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do classic Land Rovers® suffer from rust?

Yes. Corrosion is an important consideration with older Land Rovers®, particularly around steel structural and chassis components. The extent varies considerably according to the individual vehicle, its history, previous repairs, storage and use.

Does rustproofing completely prevent rust?

No. Rustproofing can provide additional protection and help slow the development of corrosion, but no treatment makes an older vehicle permanently immune to rust. Continued inspection and maintenance remain important.

Can you rustproof a classic Defender 90 or 110?

Suitable classic Defender 90 and Defender 110 models purchased from John Brown 4×4 can be assessed for rust protection. The appropriate approach will depend on the condition of the individual vehicle.

Can you rustproof a Series Land Rover®?

Yes, where appropriate. Series Land Rovers® can benefit from preventative corrosion protection, but we’ll consider the vehicle’s existing condition and originality before recommending work.

Can you apply rustproofing over existing corrosion?

Existing deterioration should be properly assessed before protective treatments are applied. Rustproofing shouldn’t be used simply to conceal an existing corrosion problem. Where repairs are required, these should be considered first.

How often does a classic Land Rover® need rustproofing?

There’s no single interval that’s right for every vehicle. Usage, storage, mileage, weather exposure and the type and condition of existing protection can all make a difference. Regular inspection allows the condition of the protection and vehicle underneath to be assessed.

Can you rustproof my Land Rover® before I collect it?

Yes. If you’re purchasing a suitable classic Land Rover® from John Brown 4×4, rustproofing can be discussed as part of its preparation before collection or delivery.

Can I bring my Land Rover® back for rustproofing later?

Yes. Existing John Brown 4×4 customers can contact us about rustproofing and corrosion protection as part of our aftersales service.

Can you rustproof a Land Rover® purchased somewhere else?

No. Our rustproofing and aftersales services are exclusively available for classic Land Rover® vehicles purchased from John Brown 4×4.
