For sale, Land Rover® Series 2 Ragtop in Light Pastel Green (1960).
We are delighted to present for sale this early Series 2 Land Rover® – not a Series 2a – which has been, in times past, rebuilt onto a galvanised chassis. We purchased this vehicle from the gentleman who conducted the work over a period of nearly a decade – but when he got to completion, he found that advanced age was meaning he simply didn’t drive it enough to warrant keeping it, and thus sold it to us, so we can find it a new home. This is an impressive package, as we will discuss later – read on below!
Externally, as the photos show, this is a very handsome Series 2 – finished in light pastel green, with sand canvas and limestone wheels, shod with Kingpin Cross Climate tyres, designed for both off and on-road use. The canvas is brand new, and the bodywork is of a spray finish, rather than an aerosol or a brush, which is nice to see. The galvanised cappings have been refinished too, as the photos show – when speaking to the previous keeper, he wanted the vehicle to look “period”, so he kept to this brief – from the razor edge bonnet, to the recent galvanised front bumper, rear grab handles, vintage black and silver number plates – the list goes on, with the only really notable addition being some defender door mirrors for improved visibility whilst driving, which is a nice touch. We struggle to think of a better looking Series 2 we’ve seen for some time through HQ – sometimes, with a build like this, people can be swayed to add lots of external extras that we call “garnish” – and often it can detract from the look rather than add to it.
On the inside, the interior is once again largely a standard affair – with three front recent standard seats, and deluxe matting to the footwells. There is a heater fitted, being the square Smiths type, which is more powerful than the round Clayton variant, and this will be welcome in colder weathers. The rear houses four individual tip up seats finished in black – these are great as they fold away to reveal the load space if needed, and are retained on a strap – or you can have any configuration of the four seats down to maximise legroom. The added bonus of a canvas with side windows means this is a light and airy vehicle to travel in even with 7 people seated – as well as providing easier blindspot monitoring for the driver. There are few more enjoyable ways of carrying the whole family around – on a sunny day, it takes a lot of beating.
It is out on the road where this Series 2 really stands apart from the rest though – the fitment of a 200TDI engine means twice the horsepower and economy of the standard set up, alongside far improved reliability – you can expect 30-40mpg, as well as the ability to keep with modern traffic flow more easily. The eagle eyed amongst you will notice that, at present in the photos she sits quite high up – this is due to an almost new set of parabolic springs, which improve the ride significantly over standard – and they will “bed in” with time – these springs are a game changer for ride quality, and if you go anywhere with potholed roads (don’t we all) or speed bumps, they make things much more pleasant. Underneath, there is plenty of evidence of money spent – down to brass front steering components – just lovely.
We often see these items in a Series Land Rover®, but the attraction here is they are rolled into one package – if you are the sort of person who fancies the Series look but need something which can go further and faster more reliably, this is a great option. If you’ve had a Defender 90 with a TDI engine in the past – it is a similar sort of experience, just further stripped back. On our test route through Thirsk Market Square, the public clearly enjoyed our presence – and we do profess that we slowed down in the newly cleaned shop windows, as it looks great with the canvas rolled up in the side profile (as photo’d). When we stopped to snap a photograph for our social medias in the square, we were inundated with people who wanted to look at it, talk to us about it and sit in it, having a picture taken. There is even a custom exhaust which sounds great and gives further performance – coupled with the galvanised chassis which, as the photos show – is even still shiny – this is a truck which should very much stand the test of time.
In summary then – if you are looking for a Series 2 that looks the part, but certainly goes far better than original period set ups, this is well worth considering. This can carry the whole family on trips out this Autumn, doesn’t attract any road tax, doesn’t need an MOT, is both ULEZ and congestion charge exempt in London, and with that previous rebuild underneath you, it should prove to be a loyal family member which would look just as good in a field on a shoot as it would be blasting round Hyde Park Corner with the canvas rolled up!
