For sale, Land Rover® 90 in Drab Olive Camouflage (1998).
We are delighted to present for sale this Land Rover® 90, finished in Drab Olive & Camouflage, sitting on 750×16 Tyres on Modular Wheels.
Externally, as one can see from the photos, this 90 began life in the military, and of course, it would be particularly suited to someone who enjoys that sort of look and “vibe”. The bodywork has survived since then in its original camouflage colour scheme, and we think it looks very appropriate and in keeping. It looks like this vehicle has been involved with radios, given the large ATU wing top boxes, and other associated bracketry, etc. Clearly, when it left the military, it was designated a “Q” registration as was commonly done when they were unable to accurately date the vehicle – so this designation is not for any reasons other than that and is part of the military history associated with it. For those wondering what age it actually might be, the logbook has been given a date of 1998. The exterior also has all the various period features you’d expect to see from a proper military Land Rover® – fixings for pioneer tools, radio kit, rear bumperettes, front lifting eyes, NATO hitch and electrics, military screw lenses for easier bulb changes, etc etc. It is nice to see that these things have been retained, and so we do conclude that this is a historically significant 90, that should remain “dressed” as is – even the Goodyear G90 tyres are OEM fit, alongside the bonnet spare.
The interior, again, retains those military features, such as the convoy light switch for headlights, the map light for the passenger, etc. There are twin outer deluxe seats in the front, with 3 point seat belts, and a central cubby box for storage. The rear has been fitted with twin bench seats to carry four more “Squaddies” in the back! This makes for a six seater Land Rover® – but if you wanted to open up the rear, a pair of sliding side windows from a Defender can be fitted for £995… this would give a station wagon effect and just brighten up the interior, if that is what you are looking for. However, if you have mountain bikes, dogs, logs or you want to keep items out of sight in the back, you may elect to leave it as it is.
Out on the road, this no frills 2.5NA diesel Land Rover® trundles along just as it should. Whilst it isn’t going to win any drag races, the 2.5NA engine is rugged and has good grunt. There is very little to go wrong with these old diesel trucks, and that is why they make for a sensible, classic 4×4 – they give good economy and reliability, and are extremely simple to maintain – just requiring oils and filters every 12,000 miles or so. There are no ECU’s, no complicated electronics or sensors, and it should prove to be a simple vehicle to maintain for the future. It should be remembered, however, that this is still a relatively modern Land Rover® 90 – enjoying coil springs, disc brakes & a five speed gearbox, like its modern counterparts – this culminates in a vehicle which, whilst still remaining essentially period, can be enjoyed on the road with modern driving characteristics, more akin to a newer Defender 90. Perhaps what is prudent to note with an ex-military Land Rover® is that they were infrequently used on salty roads, and invariably stored indoors – this means that they have stood the test of time far better than their civilian counterparts. This vehicle is no exception, and should provide the owner with many years of use.
In summary, here is an opportunity to bring into the family a very cool, ex-military 4×4 Land Rover® which can fulfil a range of roles. It is an opportunity to own a military vehicle, which is as simple to maintain as its civilian counterparts. We love it.
