We are delighted to present this 1978 Land Rover® Series 3, which was originally supplied on 20th November 1978 to Edwards Garages of Wrexham. Based on the available information, this Series 3 was originally a showroom model – and was not registered until 1st February 1979, to benefit from a full 12 months of road tax – a common thing for those who have ever bought a new vehicle! We bought this particular vehicle off an enthusiast, who oversaw the rebuild and has kindly supplied photos of the works carried out, which are contained within the paperwork file.

Externally, as the photos show, this Series 3 is finished in Marine Blue, with Limestone Wheels & Roof – exactly as one would expect. It is great to see that the heritage certificate confirms this Land Rover® was originally supplied in Marine Blue… not something which is normally noted on such certificates – and shows it is “as supplied” when purchased new. There are plenty of features one would hope to see – such as the colour coded lamp surrounds, rear grab handles, original “Land Rover” rear mud flaps, free wheeling hubs for superior fuel economy, and spare on the rear door, just as it should be… it looks great with a good cross-climate tyre to fill the arches and improve road holding. This example does not carry a pristine bodywork or paint finish – it is, however, very serviceable and probably better than one would see on similar vehicles. Due to this, and in order to achieve a “great value price point” – we have elected to not carry out improvements in this regard…. whoever purchases this vehicle will be doing so due to the spec and features ypu can read below.

The interior houses a set of 3 standard front seats, with deluxe matting to the footwells. The interior is pleasingly standard, with original items such as the hand throttle fitted, should you want to set a minimum “RPM” for a certain job – like jump-starting another car, or for use with a winch. The rear houses twin rear bench seats, to give seating for seven including the driver – the rear has a pair of side windows for that station wagon effect – this means a light and airy drive no matter where you sit, and makes blindspot monitoring easier. The rear floor is fitted with a load mat to protect the floor against damage and scratches.

Where this vehicle really shines though is out on the road – the diesel engine has been fully rebuilt (with photos supplied) and it is a dream – it pulls well to speed, starts with minimal glow and sounds great, too. An overdrive is fitted to give an extra gear, and mated to the free wheeling hubs, gives the best possible fuel economy in the standard set up. The galvanised chassis gives peace of mind against corrosion and means it should stand the test of time, should you wish to pass it down through the family. As one can imagine, it gives a great account of a period Series driving experience…. it just puts a smile on your face as you go down the road.

In summary then, if you are looking for a Series 3 Land Rover® which could stand the test of time, be passed down through the family as a loyal friend, or you are looking for a tax and MOT exempt Land Rover® which you can drive around the capital, whilst benefitting from classic insurance – this is worth serious consideration. With a galvanised chassis, rebuilt engine and good provenance – whether you plan to keep it for life, or are looking for a solid investment for the future, this should fit the bill! It even comes with an original OEM owners manual… which we suspect is the one it originally came with.
