We are delighted to present for sale this 1974 Series 3 Land Rover®, which is presented in the most popular colour configuration – Deep Bronze Green with Limestone Roof & Wheels. This particular example has had just 8 former keepers since 1974 – that is a new keeper roughly every 7.5 years!

Externally, as the photos show, this Series 3 is presented in largely original condition – with the OEM sized 600×16 tyres, rear spare mounted on the back door, tow bar with electrics, original galvanised cappings, galvanised front bumper, tow bar with electrics, rear lifting handles and door mounted mirrors. The gent who we purchased this vehicle from is very much a Series Land Rover® enthusiast – he used to have a large collection, but due to old age has been liquidating them over the last several years… entrusting each one to us to find them a home where they’ll be appreciated (and cared for) as much as they have been in his care. This is why he has opted not to go for a “retail shiny” finish – he wanted to keep it true to the original brief, barring some sliding side windows to give superior visibility and make this vehicle more pleasant for travelling passengers. He was so strict about this, he kept the original standard reflective number plates it would’ve always worn – even though it now qualifies for black and silver variants, should you prefer them… we can print and fit these for a small cost for you if so desired.

The same vein can be found on the inside – there are three front deluxe seats, along with matting to the footwells, and a deluxe interior trim cover for the front bulkhead, to give additional sound deadening. The original sun visors are still fitted, which is welcome on a bright sunny day. All the front seats have seat belts fitted, with two 3 point outer belts, and a central lap belt. The rear houses a pair of twin bench seats to bring seating to seven people including the driver – these can also be folded away and the bottom cushions removed entirely, so you can use the load space if needed. The rear floor has a mat fitted to protect against muddy boots and scratches. The added benefit of these sliding side windows means a light and airy feel inside, whether travelling in the front or the rear – they make a remarkable difference to the experience.

The driving experience is, as you’d expect, close to the original OEM feel – it is even wearing the correct size 600×16 tyres, which give light steering and nippy acceleration, ideal for B road driving – this also gives far superior off road performance to later “beefier” treads as they do not dig in – they skip on the top of muddy terrain instead of bogging down. Free Wheeling Hubs are fitted to aid fuel economy and reduce axle wear, but other than that, this is very much the essence of what a Land Rover® Series 3 should feel like… the previous keeper took caring for his Land Rovers® seriously, and it feels as though it has been used and loved wherever necessary – sometimes, Series trucks which haven’t been used often can feel a bit wooden – that isn’t the case here. The tick over is smooth, it pulls well, stops well, and the steering is both light and as direct as it ever gets… all signs of a well sorted machine… we really didn’t have too much to do during our inspection, other than some spark plugs and a brake & electrics check. We found all other systems in working order “out of the box”.

In summary then, if you are looking for a Series 3 which can carry the whole family, whilst benefitting from MOT & Tax exemptions alongside classic insurances, then this must be worth consideration. Those who have followed the site for some time will know that the asking price here is appealing… this is not because this is in any way a lesser car – but rather because we’ve had to do less to get it to our standards, and haven’t needed to spend many hours on cosmetic refinishing – this is quite simply just a great truck, at a good price, for someone who wants to use and enjoy their Series, rather than keep it in the garage for the sunniest days. We are always mindful when pricing a vehicle cheaper, as sometimes people view it as a lesser or a “bad car”…. and sometimes it can work against us – and make it look like we are doing the hard sell… in our view this is very much the clever choice, and we wish all Land Rovers® had led this life of being used as intended.
