High Spec “HSE” Model – Electric Sunroof, Electric Seats with Memory, Cruise Control, Dual Zone Climate Control with Rear Vents, Extended Leather Package, Cassette Player, Electric Mirrors, Heated Seats, Front & Rear Electric Heated Screens, Tow Bar & Electrics, Ambient Lighting, upgraded Alloy Wheels, Side Steps & Running Boards, etc etc. Driven into HQ by member of the team on a 3 hour journey.

Here we have for sale the ever popular and “cult” P38 Range Rover – supplied in Oxford Blue. This particular example is a high specification “HSE” model, with the sought after 4.6L V8 engine…. this unit is well noted to be reliable and smooth, whilst giving modern day power outputs. We collected this vehicle from a location around 3 hours away from HQ, and it sailed back, barely revving over 2000rpm. To those who don’t know how these vehicles feel on the road, the light and airy cabin combined with the ride height give a commanding drive. Being the HSE model, it also has a level of equipment that many brand new cars don’t actually enjoy…. electric everything, pretty much and all in working order.

Externally, the paintwork survives in largely original condition, which is lovely to see. It does, of course, bear the odd mark from the last 27 years of use, but as the photos show, it is a very striking vehicle. It is nice to see that the plastic front and rear bumpers and optional side steps are still present and in good condition. It is clear that the 123,000 miles this vehicle has covered have been conducted by people who have enjoyed and looked after it.

The interior is quite simply a lovely place to be – this HSE model enjoys both the extended leather and wood package, along with electric seats, heated seats, front and rear heated screens, dual zone climate control (working!) with rear air vents, cruise control & a fantastic “Harmon Kardon” HiFi system – this rivals even some of the best modern cars for audio clarity. This is a proper family classic with a large boot and split tailgate, so can be pampered and enjoyed, but can still do the school run if it is needed, or thanks to the optional Tow Pack, can be used to tow a trailer or caravan if required.

As mentioned previously, we had the pleasure of driving this vehicle for a number of hours back to HQ, across the width of England – enjoying all types of road, including the motorway. It performed without fault and sublimely – mostly due to the fantastic air suspension (you have to experience this to understand how good a car can ride), but also down to the refined power delivery that amazing engine provides. The myth that a Range Rover such as this will be dreadful on fuel was not born out during our ride home, which sipped less than 1/4 of a full tank. Sure, it doesn’t do 60mpg, but on a longer run at lower revs, it does not feel out of the way of many a car trundling around today. Thanks to the power on offer, it can easily keep with (and overtake!) modern traffic.

Quite simply, the 4.6L P38 makes for a fantastically useable classic. Residual values are rising and if kept in good condition, your investment in this vehicle should be more than safe. It doesn’t even cost the earth to tax – being £375 a year, due to being built before 2001. For example, a similar Td5 post 2001 Defender 90 would be double that figure. Add in classic insurance, due to the fact this P38 is over 25 years old, and suddenly it seems to make good financial sense. But really, who cares about that when you are going to look super coll in this retro 1990s Classic Range Rover. We love it!
