Here we have for sale a rebuilt Land Rover® Defender 90, which has, in the last five years, been rebuilt onto a galvanised chassis. This vehicle was purchased locally and was “driven in” to our premises by John Brown Sr himself – he was impressed, and if you’d like to know why – please read on below!

Firstly, the 300TDI Land Rover® Defender 90 is a well revered machine. The engines were noted to be the best that Land Rover® ever produced, and the 90 itself has endured a long life span as being a fantastic vehicle for a wide range of purposes. In this guise, the Defender 90 perhaps excelled itself – power steering, coil springs, that amazing 300TDI engine which was both reasonably refined, very robust and economical. The soft top variant also meant that it could be used in the height of summer, but still function equally well in the winter months, with the canvas down and the heater on. Add to that the option to fit up to seven individual seats, gives added appeal.

The achilles heel however, was always corrosion….. the cappings on a 90 were never galvanised, and neither was the chassis – meaning your pristine Land Rover® soon began to look “tired”. Rebuilding such a vehicle is a time consuming and costly process, meaning that they are generally worth less than the rebuild bill comes to. And that is where this vehicle wins out. Five years ago, somebody went to the trouble and expense of rebuilding it onto a new galvanised chassis. Our inspections have shown that this rebuild went further than merely replacing the chassis. If you know where to look, there are signs that this was done with great care and consideration and without regard for expense. In addition to this, the previous owner elected to carry out a full engine rework at 131,000 miles (currently on 149,000 miles and driving like new), even though the engine did not warrant the work. He was fastidious, and just wanted the peace of mind that it was all “sorted”. This also means that the engine bay is a delightful place to look.

All this work, endeavour, money and time has resulted in a quite unique vehicle – it is clean and tidy and smart wherever one cares to look. The drive is no different – somebody has gone to the expense of increasing the gearing ratios in the transfer box meaning that the drive is more relaxing than usual, and the motorway cruise is quiet and refined. This Defender is as at home on the outside lane of the M1 as it would be on a potholed B-Road!

Our own Land Rover® 90, which we use as a shop truck, has been in the company for many years, and has enjoyed much attention, financial input and industry. It has been constantly improved to get it to where it is today… and this Defender 90 can sit shoulder to shoulder with that vehicle – it is that good. We love the Arles Blue colour scheme with matching genuine Wolf Wheels and recent BF Goodrich tyres – we love the 7 seat period “Techno” interior, which is age correct for the vehicle – and we love the fact that it is all so “up-together and sorted” – very much like the owner from which it was purchased!

If you are looking for a well sorted, 300TDI Land Rover® Defender 90 that you can jump in and just use, then this is worth a look – if you appreciate things which are “correct” and want something that is going to last a lifetime, for the price of a 2nd hand car, then this truck provides that in abundance. In 9 years time, it will qualify from Tax and MOT exemption – not a great deal of time to wait – and in the meantime, you can enjoy classic insurance quotes, MUCH lower road fund than a TD5 or TDCI and a simple level of maintenance which does not involve an OBD reader or dealer-level diagnostics (and costs!). As you can tell, HQ really does rate this vehicle. If you are looking for a good Defender 90 to keep for life, this is, in our eyes, a wise purchase…… but we’ve already told you that!
