We are delighted to present for sale this 1992 Defender 90, which we purchased locally to us in Ripon, North Yorkshire. This particular example benefits from the 200TDI engine, alongside power steering – with a long MOT until 13th February 2027. This was driven back to HQ by a member of the team – more on that later – and is presented in Station Wagon format with sliding side windows and rear bench seats.

Externally, as the photos show, there are many standard features one would expect – from the Marine Blue bodywork, to the Michelin 4×4 Latitude tyres, which are fitted to OEM white steel rims, the number plate on the front bumper, with black headlight surrounds and grill, and the white top roof piece with the Marine Blue window sides. There are plenty of upgrades one might want – such as the “Land Rover” rear mud flaps, the height adjustable tow bar and electrics, spare wheel cover, sliding side windows for superior visibility and the front LED headlights for superior night driving with modern daytime running lights. We really enjoy it at HQ when we get the opportunity to sell a non-modified, proper Defender 90 – exactly as you’d of expected to buy in 1992 – and this one is exactly that.

On the inside, there are a pair of deluxe high back seats, with 3 point seat belts, and a central cubby box for stowing items, with a pair of cup holders which are very welcome. There is a good quality stereo and speakers, and a 12v cigarette lighter socket for charging phones and sat nav systems, should this be required. OEM floor mats are still fitted, which is nice to see. The rear houses a pair of bench seats to give seating for six people including the driver, and the sliding side windows give a station wagon set up with improved light inside and visibility for the driver, without the costs associated with a TD5 or TDCI XS model – which you’d need to pay for to replicate this! All in all, it is a nice, no frills, place to sit and enjoy the proper, authentic Defender experience.

Out on the road, as mentioned above, we did have the honour of an extended test drive from Ripon to our premises, which includes all types of road – B Roads, A Roads and Motorway. The previous keeper always wanted to keep this Land Rover®, but due to a change of circumstances, found himself offering it to us – this means it has been both well looked after, and was sold to us with virtually a brand new MOT for peace of mind. The 200TDI with power steering means this is quite happy powering along at any speed – even in the outside lane at 70mph – and it will go far faster than legal limits allow, should you fancy losing your license! The disc brakes and coil springs, alongside a five speed box, mean this could easily be a Land Rover® you could use as an every day run about, without computerisation or OBD items – everything under the bonnet is entirely mechanical – even the fuel pump – meaning it can be maintained either at home with a £20 Haynes Manual, or at a local garage who won’t charge you a fortune. That really is the joy here – also coupling to that the classic look and colours, as well as the fact this vehicle does not fall under the revised road tax laws post 2001 – it is less than half the cost of a later TD5 and TDCI to road tax – some of those can be nearly £800 under current regs! We’ve got 200TDI’s in the HQ fleet with verified mileages of 300,000+ without any incidents, other than a service each year. The Michelin Latitude tyres give the very best compromise between on and off road ability and don’t drum at speed – they’re also a pricey set of tyres which are not far off new, and give the new keeper an idea of the previous owners mindset!

In summary, if you are looking for a Classic Land Rover® which can carry the whole family, which can be used far more frequently than a Series, that the wife will drive the kids to school in – and which won’t look out of place down the local pub, on the shoot, or even in Central London – this is well worth consideration. In a world of “blinged out” Defenders – this is a lovely opportunity to get something exactly as the factory intended – without any additions which will serve to increase maintenance costs, or the initial purchase price!
