We are delighted to present for sale this extremely early Series 2 Land Rover® – not a later Series 2a – having been built in the first year of full production, 1958. This particular example has been rebuilt onto a galvanised chassis in times past, to ward away corrosion concerns.

Externally, this has all the hallmarks of an early Series 2 – the dateless six digit registration number, the OEM Avon Traction Mileage tyres which afford light steering and good acceleration (expensive new today!), the recent galvanised front bumper, recent sand canvas, etc etc…. Mid Welsh Grey was an optional extra colour at the time of build, and in our opinion, with the limestone wheels and sand canvas – you’d struggle to find a better looking Series 2. There are some upgrades over standard, such as a tow bar with modern electrics to allow towing, and some larger defender style wing mirrors for superior visibility.

On the inside, there are three front standard seats, along with deluxe matting to the footwells. The square smiths heater under the dash means you won’t get cold in the winter months, which is a nice touch. There are many period correct “early” Series 2 features here – the twist to open vents (known as “Shalack” vents) rather than the lift to open, and the horn on the stalk to the LHS of the steering wheel… in fact, even the passenger wiper was an option at this time, which is fitted… a real luxury! The wiper motors have been upgraded to a much more powerful modern equivalent – instead of just moving water around on the screen as per the original chrome units, they actually can clear water! The rear is fitted with twin bench seats, affording seven seats including the driver, making this a Series Land Rover® that the whole family can enjoy – these seats also fold away should you need access to the whole load space, or be carrying a heavy load, or the dog with muddy paws.

Out on the road, this Series 2 gives a pleasing period drive – the diesel engine starts up with minimal glow, and it drives exactly as one would expect – it is very enjoyable for us to get back to the essence of what a Series Land Rover® driving experience is, and this delivers a very stock driving experience. It is great to see that someone has gone to the trouble to source a set of Avon Traction Mileage tyres, which would’ve been the OEM fitment… they afford light steering when manoeuvring and good acceleration to speed, so you can keep with the traffic flow more easily around town. As we often find when vehicles have been rebuilt, it has a well sorted feel behind the wheel, and stops well too thanks to a recent brake service.

In summary then – if you are looking for a Series Land Rover® the whole family can enjoy, that you can pass down as a family heirloom within the family thanks to a previous rebuild, this must be worthy of consideration. We seldom see Series 2’s as opposed to Series 2a’s – especially from the very first year of production like this. With the added bonuses of MOT and Tax exemption – don’t forget that it is also exempt from MOT, ULEZ, congestion charge, clean air zones and road tax – to make life cheaper and simpler… it even qualifies for classic insurance.
