Land Rover® Series 3 *Station Wagon* (MLD)

For sale, Land Rover® Series 3 in Limestone (1979).

Petrol 2286cc. MOT until 7th August 2020, and exempt thereafter. Rare and genuine Station Wagon.  Parabolic Springs.

We are excited to be able to present for sale this outstanding SWB Series 3 Station Wagon, presented in rare limestone colour. As can be seen from the photos, this vehicle, in our opinion, really stands out from the crowd - the station wagon was made in far fewer numbers than their counterpart hard tops and as such, are difficult to find. Sourcing one in this condition is a real task. The fitment of many 'luxury' items is what distinguishes this vehicle from a regular Series 3.

Externally, a genuine station wagon such as this enjoys a tropical roof with interior vents, sliding rear side windows and alpine lights to the roof. Lamp guards are fitted front and rear, and there are some handy lifting eyes on the front bumper for towing your neighbour's 4x4 out of a snow drift. Side steps were fitted as standard on this model to aid entry to the vehicle as it was expected to carry seven in comfort - it is nice to see these are still fitted. Defender-style mirrors are also fitted which make it a lot safer to drive on modern roads. A towbar and electrics is fitted should you wish to purchase a period caravan or go camping with a modern trailer! The spare wheel is housed in a sensible location, on the back door, but a proper swingaway wheel carrier has been used which prevents deterioration of the back door and its hinges over time. We really think that this old girl, in this colour looks really pretty. A set of road biased tyres is fitted for quieter running and lighter steering, all of which have good tread - and the spare looks to be a new item also.

The interior reflects that of the exterior, being almost completely original yet in remarkable condition given the age. So often we find these irreplaceable interior elements either missing or damaged beyond repair..... and nowadays it is not possible to replace these items. It is therefore really lovely to find an interior such as this which not only looks good, but is in really useable condition throughout. The front seat set is of the deluxe type, and the rear tip up seats all survive, which is quite unusual. Many of the other factory installed deluxe trim elements are still in situe including the tunnel cover, deluxe trim to the windows and the roof headliner which is about as good as we have ever seen. The interior light even works on a switch to the right hand side which is really great to see and also very useful on dark mornings and evenings. This vehicle really could be used to take the kids to school on a cold, snowy morning!

Out on the road is another place where these station wagons excel - their deluxe trim makes for a quieter, smoother, calmer driving experience. The addition of the overdrive (for quieter running and lower revs at higher speed) plus the fitment of uprated parabolic springs means that not only is this vehicle quieter than standard, it also feels smoother and more compliant over bumps than a regular Series 3. Quite often we find station wagons fitted with the diesel engine but finding one with the quieter and smoother petrol engine really does help the vehicle to excel. Incidentally, the engine starts very easily and sounds lovely from cold.

In this configuration then, this Series 3 delivers the best possible driving and passenger experience for a vintage vehicle whilst still being able to transport the family in relative comfort - the combination of a vintage truck which will appreciate in value, be MOT and tax exempt next year, be cheap to insure and have low running costs alongside the ability to function as a family 4x4 is most appealing.

In short, if you are looking for a vintage Land Rover® to actually use with the family, which is as comfortable as possible and pretty to look at, then this rare and pretty Land Rover® is most worthy of consideration.
