Land Rover ® Series 3 *Rebuilt Engine & Gearbox* (KAC)

For sale, Land Rover ® Series 3 in Mid Grey (1972).

MOT until 15th August 2019 with no advisories, though MOT exempt anyway. Tax Exempt. Petrol 2286cc. Recently rebuilt engine with unleaded head, recon gearbox with high ratio transfer box.

Here for sale we have this smart Series 3, in popular mid grey, previously sold by us in 2012 and having had just three keepers from new. We always enjoy reselling vehicles that we have known for a long time, for obvious reasons - and this one is no exception. During the previous keepers ownership much mechanical improvement has been undertaken. This has included the rebuilding of the engine, the installation of an unleaded head, power plus camshaft for added pull, and an uprated alternator. The result is an engine that ticks over almost silently at about 400RPM! It really is a sweet unit after all that love and attention. This engine has then been mated to a recon gearbox with Ashcroft high-ratio gears for the transfer box. Mated to the 750 tyres, this makes for an unrivalled driving experience with each gear being much longer, giving far less noise and aggravation whilst driving.

Externally, the vehicle survives much as it did back when previously sold - there are various welcome features including razor bonnet, vintage numberplates, defender style mirrors for increased visibility, free wheeling hubs for increased economy (there is also a thermostatic kenlowe fan which means this petrol engine will deliver the very best MPG from a unit of this type), alpine lights in the roof (rear windows could be cut in if required with seats added to create seating for 7 and a station wagon effect) and a good set of 750 tyres on period rims.

The interior is standard and uncomplicated, and enjoys three front seats with deluxe matting to the footwells. The rear is unfitted apart from the spare wheel which is housed in the correct position on a dog to the rear of the bulkhead.

With all the upgrades and improvements, we looked forward very much to seeing if the driving experience was significantly affected - and we were not disappointed. The rebuilt engine coupled with the increased ratios affords lots of low revving motoring and long in-gear acceleration. It is much like fitting an overdrive but not having to worry about using it or suffering from the increased whine produced by these units. Once dropped into top gear, the vehicle pulls steadily towards the legal limit and we dare say that with the correct stretch of road one would be able to go further...... in other words, this Series is well set up for higher cruising speeds than one would normally associate with a Series Land Rover ®. It is also good to note that the steering felt light and the brakes sharp. The gearbox changes up and down nicely, probably due to the recent attention it has received - all in all, it was a relatively, smooth, quiet driving experience.

In summary, if you are looking for a mechanically, well sorted Series 3, with capability to cruise at modern speeds, then this super little Series 3 is the one to go for.
