Land Rover ® Series 3 *Station Wagon* (PBT)

Sold

For sale, Land Rover ® Series 3 in Marine Blue (1979).

Will be supplied with 12 months MOT. Petrol 2286cc with Weber Carb conversion. Free Wheeling Hubs. Parabolic springs all round. Previously sold by us to a local gent, and known to be reliable in ownership, having covered 3000 miles last year.

Here for sale we have a smart Series 3 hard-top presented in useful Station Wagon configuration. This set-up enjoys alpine lights (aids the view of rear passengers), correct sliding station wagon windows, and seating for up-to seven people including the driver. In other words, this vintage truck can still be used to convey the family through mud and snow!

On the outside, the bodywork survives in fairly straight order as the photos demonstrate. Free Wheeling Hubs are fitted to the front wheels to increase fuel economy and reduce front-axle wear. A full set of brand new 750 tyres are fitted, which are slightly larger than normal and help with the gearing ratios to create a more relaxed driving experience. Also fitted are fog and reversing lamps which both work as they should. Defender-style door mirrors are fitted to aid visibility to the rear of the vehicle. A set of front lampguards are fitted for that period look, along with rear mudflaps and rear grab handles.

The interior is quite nicely appointed, with matching seats to the front and rear. There are three recent standard front seats, with twin rear bench seats, complete with 4 lap belts. Deluxe matting is fitted to the front and the rear enjoys a load mat also. The rear of the vehicle has been recently upgraded with the addition of a new chequerplate floor for strength - quite often catalytic corrosion affects the strength of the old aluminium floor, so it is nice to see that these improvements have been carried out.

Having known this vehicle for some time, we are able to comment on some of the recent mechanical improvements - a full brand new exhaust is fitted, and a recent rear crossmember with extensions was also added to rid the vehicle of historic chassis welds around usually troublesome spring hangers. In addition, a full set of shock absorbers have been fitted due to the leaking of the old items, which is all good to see. Prior to purchase of the previous keeper, a fully reconditioned gearbox was also fitted (receipt in file) which again negates any concerns over historic gearbox issues.

Out on the road, this series pootles along very nicely, assisted by the Weber Carb, 750 tyres and free wheeling hubs - these combined improvements make the driving experience more economical and a bit more comfortable also. The previous keeper has enjoyed driving this vehicle so much he managed to clock up a healthy 3000 mile tally - no mean feat for an elderly Series 3!

If you are looking for a reliable, much improved Series 3 in Station Wagon setup to get the family around in snow or loose ground, or just want to own an old Land Rover® for fun and investment purposes, then this truck is worth considering. As already mentioned, this vehicle will come supplied with a new MOT but from there on in will be exempt from both MOT's & Road Tax. With classic insurance running at around £100 fully comprehensive, it should prove an investment that does not require huge financial input, whilst being able to be enjoyed. With residual prices increasing almost daily, it is not out of the question that the investment will continue to mature.
