Sold

For sale, Land Rover ® 101 Forward Control Camper Conversion in Drab Olive (1977).

MOT until 27th December 2019 with no advisories. 3500cc V8 with LPG (certified). Stunning Camper Conversion. High Ratio Differentials AND Overdrive. Enormous spec - read on!

We are delighted to present for sale this quite stunning camper conversion. This vehicle is simply the finest conversion we have had the pleasure to present for sale - very few stones have been left unturned in this conversion, and it has been designed to be fully self sufficient, and as such would serve well as a vehicle for a worldwide road trip.

Externally, this 101 has all the trappings of a good vehicle of this type, with full pioneer tools, working sirens and beacons, bridging plates, original lighting with uprated LED bulbs, LED running lights, working winch and roof rack with spare wheel storage. The roof also houses solar panels which feed into a twin battery system which is a split charge relay type. The paintwork is in really good condition and the whole vehicle is presented nicely.

The interior conversion has been well thought out and EVERYTHING that we have tested works. The lighting has been designed to give both good illumination whilst saving battery power. The two roof lights can be illuminated bright and dim with either one used at any time (so if battery life is low, one can still be used). There is also an LED Strip Light running right around the cabin for those times when battery power is good. There is a recently fitted Diesel heater with control panel in the cabin - it can also be isolated to save voltage drain. The oven and grill work and are powered by a small gas bottle in the side locker. Also in the larger side lockers are stored various spares and other useful items including jack and wheel brace. There is also a NATO hitch in there should this be required. The sink has electric running water, and all works well. All the interior items are included in the sale. The driving compartment, which can be isolated from the cabin via blinds is equally well laid out. There is a stereo and speakers with 6 CD multi changer for evening entertainment (this can also be used from the rear cabin) and there are two comfortable Defender XS seats for the driver and passenger. There are lots of auxiliary switches and gauges, all of which work and are well fitted. There is a rev counter, oil temp gauge, map lights, and various other additional systems. There is also a valuable overdrive.

Out on the road, the feeling of a well sorted vehicle continues - this is without doubt the best driving 101 we have ever had in all our years of trading. The high ratio differentials mated to the overdrive give an amazing driving experience and we are sure that the new owner would find it extremely comfortable for a long journey despite what its age and appearance might suggest. The previous owner used this vehicle for long road trips and rallies - so it is tried and tested. The addition of the LPG system which has been recently certified also means that the fuel consumption on a long journey is much more reasonable than with a standard V8 engine. The petrol tank and auxiliary LPG give a very long run time, and coupled with the solar panels and split charge relay system this ensures great electrical power delivery on a prologued run between fuel stations. It really is set up for a long road trip and would be ideal to use to drive across large continents - particularly where roads are poor - at which point the working winch would too come in handy.

The only items for consideration for the new owner that we have noticed are a small crack in the passenger windscreen (not mentioned on the MOT) and some light crazing to the sidewalls of the tyres... these tyres are of course inner tubed in any case. Other than these items, we have found it extremely difficult to pick any fault or criticism with this vehicle - it really is that good and we are sure a better one will never come around.

If you are looking for an exceptional 101 to use on a round the world road trip, then we think this makes a great buy at this price, when other traders are asking up to 3x this amount for a similar vehicle for similar tasks.

Please find below the description from the previous owner, who has had lots of experience using this vehicle for long trips:

I have owned this vehicle for the past 5 years and travelled many happy miles to various rallies around the country. It’s MOT’d until December (although it is both tax and MOT exempt). The vehicle runs great on its original 3.5 V8 petrol engine and is also fitted with LPG. The engine has
recently been serviced and the carbs have been overhauled by Martin at Able Engineering (101 Parts).

The gearbox and overdrive work fine. Chassis is clean and tidy. Front axle chrome balls are in good condition, corrosion free. Tyres are Michelin 8.25-16 with loads of tread left, slight cracking in the side walls but should last for many more miles. The vehicle is also fitted with a working ‘Warn’ winch and a roof rack.

The rear compartment has been camperised and is comfortable for two people. It’s heated by a modern Eberspacher D2 heater and an ‘opening’ sky light is fitted to let in light and fresh air. There is a two burner cooker with oven and grill, sink with running cold water and storage space for
pots, pans etc. I have also created an additional ‘lower’ rear door that allows the rear steps to be left down whilst on the rally field and the main doors to be closed/locked.
